Yamna Boosts Omans Hydrogen Advantage Through Strategic Data Center Expansion

UK-based green energy developer Yamna has announced a strategic expansion into green data center development that significantly enhances Omans position as a hydrogen powerhouse. The company is leveraging its major hydrogen project in Dhofar Governorate to establish Oman as a dual hub for sustainable energy and digital infrastructure.

Yamna is a principal member of a consortium with EDF Group and J-POWER that was awarded a land block in April 2024 to develop a gigascale green ammonia project in Omans Dhofar Governorate. The project spans 341 square kilometers and aims to produce 1 million tonnes of green ammonia annually through renewable-powered hydrogen production.

The consortium plans to install approximately 4500MW of combined wind and solar capacity supported by a 2500MW electrolyzer and battery storage systems. The produced hydrogen will supply an ammonia facility in the Salalah Free Zone for both domestic consumption and export markets.

Yamna CEO Abdelaziz Yatribi emphasized the strategic importance of the expansion stating that as AI drives unprecedented demand for both clean power and computing capacity their integrated approach enables faster more efficient and greener infrastructure that will underpin the digital economy.

The companys green data center initiative represents a significant extension beyond its core focus on green hydrogen and Power-to-X derivatives. Yamna intends to develop integrated power-and-data campuses to support AI-driven hyperscale computing workloads. These facilities will integrate renewable energy battery storage and hydrogen-based power solutions ensuring continuous low-emission electricity supply with built-in backup systems.

This strategic convergence creates substantial benefits for Oman by generating local demand for clean energy beyond export markets and improving project financial viability. The development positions Oman as a strategic hub connecting key green hydrogen demand centers in Europe and Asia.

Yamna highlighted that Oman offers exceptional solar and wind resources resulting in one of the lowest levelized costs of electricity which is critical for green hydrogen and ammonia production. The Omani governments proactive approach through Hydrogen Oman provides a supportive framework for green hydrogen and derivative projects.

The company is actively evaluating global locations with strong renewable resources connectivity and infrastructure to identify viable opportunities for similar integrated developments. Yamnas global portfolio includes export-oriented e-ammonia projects currently planned in Brazil India Morocco and Oman.

Market experts identify this development as notably enhancing Omans green hydrogen value proposition by creating new opportunities for businesses to capitalize on integrated clean tech ecosystems. The initiative supports economic diversification and attracts vital foreign investment to the Sultanate.

Omans hydrogen strategy targets production of 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030-31 with current portfolio including nine active projects. The country has allocated government incentives totaling 36 billion dollars to support hydrogen projects including significant reductions in land fees during development phases.

The integration of data center development with green hydrogen production represents an innovative approach that addresses critical infrastructure limitations while guaranteeing reliable access to green baseload power. This positions Oman advantageously in the growing intersection of clean energy and digital infrastructure markets.
