DEWA Refinances Fourth Phase of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has successfully completed the refinancing of the fourth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. This strategic financial move marks a significant milestone in Dubai’s ambitious renewable energy program.

The refinancing deal involves the 950MW fourth phase of the solar park which represents one of the largest single-site solar energy projects in the world. DEWA structured the refinancing to optimize the project’s financial performance and enhance returns for stakeholders involved in this landmark renewable energy initiative.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is a cornerstone of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 which aims to provide 75% of Dubai’s total power capacity from clean energy sources by 2050. When fully completed the solar park will have a planned capacity of 5000MW by 2030 making it the largest single-site solar park globally.

The fourth phase utilizes concentrated solar power technology combined with photovoltaic solar panels. The project features the world’s tallest solar tower standing at 260 meters and incorporates advanced energy storage capabilities that allow for round-the-clock clean energy generation.

DEWA’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer stated that the refinancing demonstrates strong investor confidence in Dubai’s renewable energy sector and the emirate’s commitment to sustainable development. The successful refinancing also reflects the project’s robust operational performance since its commissioning.

The refinancing package was structured to take advantage of favorable market conditions and lower interest rates which will result in reduced financing costs over the project’s lifecycle. This financial optimization will contribute to more competitive electricity tariffs for consumers while maintaining the project’s sustainability objectives.

International and regional financial institutions participated in the refinancing arrangement showcasing the project’s appeal to diverse investor groups. The transaction received strong support from the banking community due to DEWA’s solid track record in delivering large-scale infrastructure projects.

The fourth phase of the solar park began commercial operations in phases with full completion achieved recently. The project has already contributed significantly to reducing Dubai’s carbon footprint and supporting the emirate’s transition toward a sustainable energy future.

DEWA continues to advance additional phases of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park with the fifth phase currently under development. The authority remains committed to implementing innovative financing solutions and cutting-edge technologies to achieve Dubai’s clean energy targets.

The refinancing transaction positions DEWA to continue its leadership role in the regional renewable energy sector while demonstrating how major infrastructure projects can be financed and refinanced efficiently in the Middle East market.
