Egypt Plans to Add 2500MW Renewable Energy Capacity to National Grid by Summer 2026

Egypt is planning to add approximately 2500 megawatts of renewable energy capacity to its national electricity grid before next summer according to a presidency statement issued following a high-level meeting chaired by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

Presidential Spokesman Mohamed El-Shennawy announced the ambitious renewable energy expansion plan during a recent press conference. The announcement follows a strategic meeting between President Al-Sisi and key government ministers including Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Engineer Karim Badawi.

The meeting covered comprehensive work plans scenarios and various alternatives across the electricity and petroleum sectors to provide equivalent fuel and ensure the stability and continuity of electricity generation. President Al-Sisi also reviewed the latest developments regarding the benefits of savings in renewable energy and petroleum products during the high-level discussions.

This renewable energy capacity addition represents a significant step forward in Egypt’s transition toward sustainable energy sources. The country has been working to diversify its energy mix and reduce dependence on fossil fuels while addressing ongoing challenges with summer electricity demand peaks.

The initiative comes as part of broader efforts to secure energy supplies for the upcoming summer season. President Al-Sisi directed the government to accelerate settlement of dues owed to foreign partners intensify efforts to attract investment in the energy sector and continue developing infrastructure to receive liquefied natural gas imports including deployment of regasification vessels.

Egypt currently operates three regasification vessels in Ain Sokhna with one undergoing maintenance that will be ready by the end of this month. The country’s four floating storage regasification units provide capacity to inject 2.75 billion cubic feet of gas into the grid creating a mechanism that enables Egypt to import LNG cargoes in addition to relying on local production.

The renewable energy expansion aligns with Egypt’s broader energy strategy which includes modernizing and upgrading existing oil refineries to increase output enhance value added and reduce fuel import costs. The government is also preparing to host the Egypt Energy Show in Cairo from March 30 to April 1 2026.

Recent discussions also addressed a newly signed memorandum of understanding between Egypt and Libya to expand cooperation in oil natural gas and mining covering exploration refinery upgrades energy transportation and petrochemical development.

Egypt’s renewable energy ambitions face infrastructure challenges as the current electrical grid requires upgrades to integrate large-scale renewable projects effectively. Despite ongoing investments present renewable capacity has stagnated at under 12 percent of Egypt’s total 60 GW capacity emphasizing the urgent need for grid upgrades and energy storage systems.

The country aims to generate 42 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 supported by major developments in solar and wind projects. This latest announcement of 2500MW additional renewable capacity represents a crucial step toward achieving these ambitious clean energy targets while addressing domestic electricity supply challenges.
