Oman Power Authority Seeks Consultants for Musandam Renewable Energy Feasibility Study

The Oman Power and Water Procurement Company has issued a Request for Proposal seeking qualified consultancy firms to conduct a comprehensive techno-economic feasibility study for renewable energy development in the Musandam Governorate.

The tender invitation represents a significant step in Oman’s broader strategy to diversify its energy portfolio and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The Musandam region located in the northern tip of Oman presents unique opportunities and challenges for renewable energy integration due to its geographical isolation and distinctive topography.

Selected consultants will be tasked with evaluating the technical and economic viability of various renewable energy technologies suitable for the Musandam area. The scope of work includes assessment of solar photovoltaic systems wind energy potential and energy storage solutions that could serve the region’s power requirements.

The feasibility study will examine current electricity demand patterns in Musandam and project future consumption needs. Consultants must analyze the existing power infrastructure and identify integration points for renewable energy systems. The study will also evaluate the cost-effectiveness of different renewable technologies compared to conventional power generation methods currently employed in the region.

A critical component of the consultancy services involves conducting detailed resource assessments. This includes measuring solar irradiation levels wind speeds and other meteorological data essential for determining the optimal renewable energy mix. The selected firm will need to establish monitoring stations and collect data over an appropriate period to ensure accuracy.

Environmental and social impact assessments form another crucial element of the required services. Consultants must evaluate potential effects on local ecosystems wildlife and communities. The study should also consider land use requirements and identify suitable sites for renewable energy installations that minimize environmental disruption.

The financial analysis portion of the feasibility study must include capital expenditure estimates operational costs and lifecycle assessments for proposed renewable energy projects. Consultants are expected to develop multiple scenarios with varying technology combinations and provide recommendations on the most economically viable options.

Grid stability and reliability considerations will be paramount given Musandam’s isolated electrical network. The study must address intermittency challenges associated with solar and wind power and propose appropriate energy storage or backup solutions to maintain consistent electricity supply.

Interested consultancy firms must demonstrate relevant experience in renewable energy feasibility studies particularly in regions with similar geographical or climatic conditions. The tender documentation specifies required qualifications technical expertise and previous project portfolios that bidders must submit.

The procurement process follows international best practices with clearly defined evaluation criteria. Technical capability methodology financial proposals and experience will be weighted in the selection process. The authority has established a timeline for submission with a specified deadline for interested parties to submit their proposals.

This initiative aligns with Oman’s Vision 2040 which aims to generate a substantial portion of the nation’s electricity from renewable sources. The government has set ambitious targets for clean energy deployment as part of its commitment to sustainable development and climate change mitigation.

Musandam’s renewable energy potential could serve as a model for other isolated regions within Oman. Success in this governorate may pave the way for similar projects in areas where grid extension from the main network is economically challenging.

The feasibility study outcomes will inform future investment decisions and policy frameworks for renewable energy deployment in Musandam. Results are expected to provide a roadmap for transitioning the region toward cleaner more sustainable power generation while ensuring energy security and affordability for residents.

Local capacity building and knowledge transfer represent additional objectives of this consultancy engagement. The selected firm will be expected to work closely with Omani engineers and technical staff facilitating skills development in renewable energy planning and assessment.

Upon completion the comprehensive feasibility study will deliver actionable recommendations including phased implementation plans regulatory considerations and financing strategies for renewable energy projects in Musandam. This foundational work is essential for attracting investment and advancing concrete renewable energy initiatives in the region.
