Omans 120MW JBB Wind Project Set for Q3 Construction Start as Renewable Energy Drive Accelerates

Construction work is set to commence in the third quarter of this year on the 120MW Jaalan Bani Bu Ali Wind Power Project in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate marking a significant milestone in Omans renewable energy transition.

The project represents the first grid-connected wind-based Independent Power Project in Omans Main Interconnected System and is being developed by Saba Jalan Wind Power SPC under the leadership of veteran Omani renewable energy executive Yahya al Rawahi.

The consortium behind the project includes EDF power solutions Al Khadra Partners and OQ Alternative Energy who signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company in December last year.

Located approximately 440 kilometers from the Port of Duqm the wind farm will span an area of roughly 11 million square meters and feature 16 wind turbines with 7.7MW capacity each. The project represents an investment of approximately 50 million Omani riyals equivalent to 130 million US dollars.

The JBB Wind Farm is expected to reach financial close in 2026 and connect to the national grid by the third quarter of 2027. Upon completion it will generate approximately 352380 MWh annually providing sufficient renewable electricity to power over 13500 Omani households.

The project will contribute significantly to Omans environmental goals by reducing carbon emissions by approximately 270000 tonnes annually while freeing up around 67 million cubic meters of natural gas each year for other uses.

According to Nama Power CEO Ahmed bin Salim Al Abri the project represents a key milestone in Omans transition to clean energy and supports the countrys energy diversification objectives. The wind farm will help achieve Omans target of increasing the share of renewables in the energy mix to reach a minimum of 30 percent by 2030.

Yahya al Rawahi CEO of Saba Jalan Wind Power emphasized the significance of the international partnerships involved stating that the project brings together world-class expertise from across the globe united by a shared commitment to delivering clean reliable energy for Oman.

The project aligns with Oman Vision 2040 and the countrys Net Zero 2050 ambitions while contributing to economic diversification and creating opportunities for small and medium enterprises through the In-Country Value program.

Set to be one of the largest onshore wind farms in Oman the JBB project is part of a broader 1GW wind development program that the sultanate is planning to implement as it strengthens its position as a leading regional hub for renewable energy.
