Mubadala Invests 325 Million in Worlds Largest UK Offshore Wind Farm

Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Company has announced a 325 million dollar investment in Orsted’s Hornsea 3 offshore wind project which will become the worlds single largest offshore wind farm upon completion.

The massive wind farm located off the Norfolk coast in the United Kingdom is expected to deliver 2900MW of capacity providing enough renewable electricity to power more than 3.3 million UK homes. The project is scheduled to become operational in 2028.

Mubadala is investing alongside a consortium led by Apollo-managed funds which includes USS and La Caisse. The investment follows Apollo Funds acquisition of a 50 percent stake in the joint venture holding Hornsea 3 with Orsted retaining the remaining 50 percent ownership and continuing to lead the development construction and operation of the project.

“This investment reflects Mubadalas approach of investing alongside experienced partners in high-quality infrastructure assets that support the energy transition while delivering long-term value” said Karim El Jazzar head of EMEA infrastructure at Mubadala. “As electricity demand continues to grow projects of this scale will play a critical role in expanding generation capacity and supporting the transition to a more sustainable energy system.”

Hornsea 3 represents Orsteds third gigawatt-scale offshore wind project within the Hornsea zone in the North Sea. The UK is recognized as the largest offshore wind market outside China and one of the most established globally supported by a stable regulatory environment and long-term policies.

Adam Petrie Infrastructure Partner at Apollo highlighted the significance of the partnership stating “Mubadala is an exceptional partner and we are pleased to welcome them to the Hornsea 3 consortium. Their investment alongside Apollo Funds and leading institutional investors speaks to the quality scale and potential of the Hornsea 3 project as a generational infrastructure asset.”

This transaction further strengthens Mubadalas partnership with Apollo and builds on its growing portfolio of renewable energy investments globally. The sovereign wealth fund which invests on behalf of the Abu Dhabi government has previously invested in renewable energy platforms including Tata Power Renewables Skyborn Renewables PAG Renewables and Rezolv Energy.

Mubadala posted a 17 percent rise in its asset base last year with the value of assets under management climbing to 1.4 trillion dirhams or 385 billion dollars by the end of 2025. The company’s portfolio spans investments in future-focused sectors including renewables artificial intelligence healthcare and advanced manufacturing.

The investment in Hornsea 3 comes as part of Mubadalas strategy to diversify the UAE’s revenue base and generate income from sources other than oil while supporting the global transition to sustainable energy systems.
